While it's not a restaurant, sometimes on weekends Johnny Rubio has breakfast burritos for sale, and he'll throw in a free cup of coffee while you're there.

Rubio's is a fruit and nut stand, indoors. Think of it as a stall at the Dallas Farmers' Market, except it's here in Cedar Hill. (It's located next to Christopher's BBQ on Main Street.)

This time of year most of his good stuff is Texas citrus and autumn-harvested nuts, but during the main growing seasons he'll bring in all kinds of locally-grown produce which is usually fresher and tastier than what you'll find at the supermarket.

I like to run by when he's open to pick up a bag of nuts and see what fruit or veggies I like, and to chat. Prices are reasonable and if you can't use a whole basket of melon or tomatoes, he'll sell them to you individually as well.

Rubio's also will make up a lovely gift basket to order. You can choose the size and what goes in it. Think about it for Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day or any special occasion. It's fresh and he doesn't need much notice.

One drawback: the business hours. It's best to call ahead first, if you can. There's often someone there late mornings, but they might take a long lunch and not be back until after 2:00 PM.

I'm looking forward to the late spring and early summer when some good Texas produce (peaches!) start rolling in.
