11/6/11
by CHill Jeff
on November 8, 2011
My family loves the chain, The Black-Eyed Pea. We have stayed away from the CHill location because of the reviews. This Sunday as we were going through the family negotiations on where to eat, we decided that maybe it was finally time to give them a try.
We entered, and waited several minutes before anyone approached us to show us to a table. Not a good start I thought, but SURELY they have improved since the last review that I read! Shortly after we were seated, the waitress came for our drink orders and gave us the rolls and corn bread. Things were looking up! We placed our orders. To her credit, the waitress kept checking on our drink and bread status. Then it went down hill...slowly ever so s-l-o-w-l-y. About 20 minutes in, she came back and said, "Have any of you been timing how long this has taken?" Weird question. No we had not. She went back to check on our order. The manager came out some time after, and said that our waitress was concerned about our order. According to her, the order was lost. Then the food quality, according to the manager wasn't up to par, so she sent it back and told the cooks to re-prep it. But it should be up shortly. Five to ten minutes later, the food was out.
Overall, the quality was up to BEP standards, although my chicken fried staek was a bit under seasoned. However, over all good.
The manager comped our food at her insistence, not mine, so all was good. But we were there far too long for BEP. BTW, when the service issue is not the wait person's fault, I always leave a decent tip, even if the food is comped. After all, if it is NOT their fault, they should not be penalized.
I sincerely hope that they get their service straightened out. We don't need another failed restaurant in CHill!

Getting better?
by Tallulah
on September 9, 2011
My family ate at BEP the first week it opened, so we were willing to overlook the service issues - the server did not write down our order and returned to the table several times to ask us to repeat it. It took a long time for the food to be served, too. Once it arrived, the food wasn't bad, but nothing stood out.

The second time we tried it, I ordered the fried chicken salad with white barbecue sauce, which arrived with grilled chicken. When I asked about it, the server said that it was served with grilled chicken unless fried was specified (which is what I thought I did when I ordered the fried chicken salad). Again, the service was very slow.

Things were looking up when we gave it a third try a few weeks ago. Service was better, as was the food. (Fried chicken salad arrived with - fried chicken!)

We're hoping that the quality of the servers improves and that the kitchen is able to respond more quickly to orders.

3rd visit
by sandra

We went to The Black Eye Pea for a birthday get together - 4 ladies.
They wanted to seat us in the back room - but it was so cold in there that you needed a sweater. Yes, I do like air-conditioning, but a place really can be too cold for the first part of July. The hostess did agree to seat us in a warmer section in the other room.
We all got something different - and everyone enjoyed their food. Service was a little slow - but better than the last time we visited, but we had to ask for everything that we needed. (ie - bread, water, to go boxes)
The rolls were delicious - but the corn bread was crumbly.
It was a little too noisy for our time to catch-up on the happenings. Seems like the sound just echos in there.
The waitress did break out our tickets as requested and the birthday girl did receive a complimentary dessert - large enough for everyone to enjoy.

Slow service at the Pea (by xaafes)

on July 31, 2011
Three times dining at the Black-eyed Pea and the service is so slow each time that I am reluctant to return. But the food has been very tasty and if I hear that the service improves I may return. Other than slow service I found the noise level such that conversation was difficult!

Not good at all

I can't believe they still don't have their act together. The service is still slow and the food is not even mentionable.

I guess they are crowded because the are The Black-Eyed Pea.

Not much has changed in food since they opened decades ago.

Disappointing, but we'll try once more

Black Eyed Pea was a favorite before it disappeared from Duncanville. My hubby still eats frequently at one near his north Dallas office. So we were happy to learn of the new Cedar Hill location. We ate there on May 10, and the service was really awful. There were several empty tables but we had to wait several minutes for one to be cleaned. When our appetizer was served, we had to ask for our tableware & napkins, and for the bread that had been promised. We had to ask for refills on our drinks. After finishing the meal and sitting there about 10 minutes, hoping the waiter would come over to see how we were, my husband had to flag him down and ask for the ticket. I understand that there's a 'break-in' period for any new restaurant, but I sure wish they had hired more experienced staff who knew how to be proactive rather than reactive to customer needs. That being said, the food tasted very good, and we'll give it another try. But not until they have time to improve the service.

The Black Eyed Pea has a great bar. The food is not mentionable but they do have a great late night happy hour.

The decor is real modern and pleasant.

Happy Hour
by chirodoc
on May 6, 2011
Couldn't believe my luck today. Strolled into the new Black eyed Pea after getting off work and nestled up to the HUGE bar. It was Happy Hour and according to the bartender I could get appetizers for $4 while seated at the bar. I ordered up a beer and placed my order of Quesadillas. Bartender was right---it was a HUGE portion. Ate, drank my beer and the check was $6!!! The bartendar also told me that they do a late night from 10-12 and it is the same prices. I will be going back--not only for the great prices and huge portions but the fantastic service. I felt they were really looking out for me. Well done! Ask for Heather--she was my bartender.

A Good Thing Gone Bad

I was excited that Cedar Hill finally got another Restaurant that had Enjoyable Food. I have now Eaten at the Pea twice since its opening day...I thoroughly Enjoyed myself the first time around only to be disappointed the second time around. The Food was great both times, but the service was very slow and frustrating the second time around. I had the Chicken fried Chicken both times because I was amazed of how good it was the and just couldn’t pull myself to try something else. I have now dubbed the Pea my Chicken Fried Chicken Place in Cedar Hill – in hopes that the service improves drastically. I love to eat good food, but the service has to be there as well. I will give it one more chance before I call it quits!

Service issues
by jonesmary306
on April 26, 2011
Went to the Pea last week and it was okay. Long lines and a little disappointing. They had service issues along with management issues. Management was more apt to criticize that to help the staff. I guess the customer did count.

Food was mediocre.
